The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend

Robertson Davies, the Canadian novelist, has a famous quote: "The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend." Bergson probably meant it metaphorically, but it seems to be literally true according to research by psychologist Martin Rolfs and colleagues. Rolfs studies the role of rapid eye movements in visual perception. "The visual scene is full of so much information, we cannot analyze everything at the same time...Our results show that shifts of visual attention precede rapid eye movements, improving accuracy in identifying objects in the visual field and speeding our future actions to those objects...And that's actually how you can tell imagery from a real visual experience, because if you move your eyes, things change on the retina. If you move your eyes while you're imagining, while you're hallucinating, nothing changes. Mind or Concept Mapping: Differences and Similarities

Click on the map to see the original on Flickr Concept mapping and mind mapping are powerful graphic organizers, strategies for organizing and representing knowledge. They were developed during the seventies. The terms may seem to be interchangeable, but there are some differences in the way they are created and used. On the map above we can see some key differences and similarities between these two techniques. In my Opinion, Concept Mapping is rather leveraging logical thinking while Mind Mapping improves the balance between creativity and logical thinking. Both techniques are complementary and help you to develop various skills such as identification of key concepts, pattern recognition, ideas organization, context understanding, etc... Both techniques belongs to the field of Visual Mapping . In the video below, Karen Rohrbauck Stout at Western Washington University explains how she uses concept mapping as an assessment technique.

Why Creativity is the new Economy

The Context Most of us have seen some excellent talks on TED , a very inspiring site. But do you know the RSA? The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) is a British multi-disciplinary institution, based in London and founded in 1754. The RSA runs a free public events programme which seeks to introduce new and challenging thinking. These are made freely available on its website after the event as mp3 audio files and videos . Ultimately, Richard Florida was invited by the RSA. His talk " Why Creativity is the New Economy ", is the most interesting conference about Creativity I've ever seen. Listening to Richard Florida's talk was like a breath of fresh air for us and we are endorsing most of Florida's statements in this talk. Who is Richard Florida? I n addition to his role as Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute, Dr. Florida is Professor of Business and Creativity at the Rotman School
